Failing resonator

A number of defects may occur, defects that can cause wear or mechanical damage. Parts of the resonator can also burn up or get clogged. This may cause the resonator to leak. Causes can be rust, sudden temperature fluctuations, road salt, oil or water in the system and low quality fuels. Symptoms of a defective resonator can be either one, or a combination of:

A lot of noise;

Power loss;

Smoke (places other than the tail pipe);

Smell of exhaust fumes in your car;

Sudden speed changes;

Overheating motor;

Soot deposits under the car.

Replacing resonator

Do you recognize any of these symptoms? Then you can undertake a couple of things. First, do a manual inspection of the parts. Look for damage, soot or oxidation. If the resonator does show one of these signs, it is due for replacement.

Are you planning to replace the resonator yourself? When replacing the exhaust resonator, we recommend that you also replace clamps, gaskets and rubbers at the same time. This way you create an optimal lifespan for your new resonator. There is no other way to do this other than using a car lift or a garage jack. Replacing the part takes about an hour for the intermediate DIY mechanic. It is a lot cheaper to replace the part yourself. At your local garage costs can quickly run-up.

Resonator exhaust
