Ignition

The ignition system plays an important role in the propulsion of the car. The function of the ignition is to deliver a spark at the right time in the right cylinder. Fuel is mixed with air in the cylinders of the engine. The spark from the ignition causes ignition in these cylinders. This ignition forces the pistons down forcefully and transfers this movement to the crankshaft. The crankshaft will then convert the linear motion into a rotary motion, which in turn is transferred to the gears of the transmission. This process is constantly repeated and only takes about a second. This ensures that the car starts to move and that you can move comfortably from A to B!

Types of ignition

In the old ignition systems, the contact points are determined by a camshaft in the distributor. The voltage is transferred here via the current from the ignition coil to the ignition coil cable, the rotor, distributor cap and then via the spark plug wires to the spark plugs. The spark plugs then ensure that a spark is created.

In more modern ignition systems, many mechanical parts are replaced by electrical parts. The ignition timing is calculated by the crankshaft sensor, camshaft sensor and knocksensor and passed on to the car's on-board computer. Based on this, it is pre-programmed when the ignition coil should supply voltage to the spark plug. This allows the spark plug to deliver a spark at the right time.
