Sheet metal or stainless steel exhaust pipe

Exhaust pipes are either made of sheet metal or stainless steel. The advantage of stainless steel exhaust pipes is that they are a lot more durable than sheet metal exhaust pipes. Sheet metal pipes are often very prone to rust. Hot exhaust gases pass through the exhaust when the car is running. When the car is parked, the exhaust cools down, causing condensation to turn into water, which leads to the sheet metal to oxidize. Rust can eventually result in leakage or tear of the material. A stainless steel exhaust pipe does not rust as quickly and therefore lasts much longer. The chance of defects with a stainless steel exhaust pipe is therefore also a lot smaller.

Replacing an exhaust pipe
