Purpose of a catalytic converter

The catalytic converter ensures that the harmful particles from the engine are converted into less harmful exhaust gases. These are converted into gases such as carbon dioxide, condensed water vapour and nitrogen. The toxic substances are cleaned by the monolith in the catalytic converter. Simply put, this can be seen as a block of ceramic material with a honeycomb structure. The exhaust gases are pushed through the honeycomb structuring, filtering and cleaning the throughput.

Catalytic converter replacement

If the catalyst no longer works sufficiently, the harmful gases will not be converted properly. This is often demonstrated during the MOT test. During the MOT test an exhaust gas test is performed, the 4 gas analysis and emission diagnosis. This test will show whether the catalytic converter in your car is still working adequately or whether it needs to be replaced. Various problems can arise with a catalytic converter. The catalyst can get clogged for example, which will decrease the engine’s power. Moreover, the part can also come off resulting in a rattling sound under the bonnet.
