Power steering pump

Most cars have hydraulic power steering. Hydraulic means that the power steering works on the basis of oil pressure. The steering pump constantly pumps power steering oil through the cylinders to the wheels. With the resulting oil pressure, a lot of force is exerted on the wheels, allowing them to turn in the correct direction. This system makes steering much easier and lighter than on cars without power steering.

The only drawback of the hydraulic power steering is that it consumes more fuel. The steering pump is constantly pumping while driving. This part also requires a drive on the straights, which has a negative influence on fuel consumption. That is why cars today are often equipped with electric power steering. These are built more compactly and only kick in when steering in a certain direction.

Power steering pump broken

When the steering pump of the car breaks down, you will immediately notice this in the steering wheel. This one will be much heavier. Do you notice that the car is steering heavier? Then check whether the steering pump, hydraulic hoses and the V-belt are still in good condition. When there is a leak in the power steering pump or the hoses, the oil level of the power steering oil will drop quickly. The steering pump has its own oil reservoir in which you can easily check the oil level. In the event of a major leak, you may find a puddle of reddish-brown power steering oil under the car.

Also check the V-belt, because it controls the drive for the pump. When the belt slips, this can be recognized by a squeaking noise under the hood. A slipping V-belt can lead to power steering failure. The steering pump cannot be driven properly if the V-belt no longer works properly. Therefore, make sure you check all parts for wear or damage.
