Cloudy headlights

Back in the day headlights were made of glass. Nowadays, however, they are almost all made of plastic. Besides a lot of advantages, there are some drawbacks. A major drawback is that headlights get cloudy easier. No matter how protective you are of your car, it is almost bound to happen. Each headlight is treated with a protective coating, but due to external factors such as rain, sunlight and dirt, this coating can fade over time. Without this protective layer, more and more scratches will appear on the lamps and materials may oxidize. How to restore your headlights?

In general, restoring headlights works as follows:

Start cleaning and degreasing the headlights. You can do this with car wash. For the best results, we recommend treating the lamps with detailing clay.

Then tap the lamps with masking tape. This way you prevent damage to the paint surrounding the lamps during sanding.

Start sanding the headlights with p1000 sandpaper. It is important that the sandpaper stays wet. Many headlight restorer kits have a special polishing agent for this. Polish the headlight well, continue for a few minutes.

Sand the headlights again with p1500 sanding paper. Repeat this also with p2000 sandpaper. The headlight restoration kits often contain different colours of sandpaper, use these in the order indicated in the instruction manual.

After sanding, rub the headlight thoroughly dry with a dry cleaning cloth. Then apply the supplied compound to a dry cloth and rub it over the headlight until it gets clear again.

Wipe the headlight clean until all polish is gone. Then thoroughly clean the headlight again so that all dirt is gone. Then dry the headlight again with a dry cloth.

You can then treat the headlight with a protective coating.
